March 11th

Getting to know you:  Glendia Bryson-Jacobs (3rd grade teacher)
I grew up in the western North Carolina mountains. I came to Raleigh to attend St. Augustine’s (College) University, and stayed after graduation. I began my teaching career in Preschool in Raleigh and Charleston, SC. In January 1985 I began teaching in WCPSS at Briarcliff Elementary in Cary and in May that same year I married. With 15 years of teaching grades 1,2 and 4 I sought a change from the traditional classroom and transferred to Underwood, for the ‘Magnet’ experience. The adventure at Underwood continues as this is my 18th year here.
My passions in education are history, reading & writing. Being here has afforded me the opportunity to teach what I love and engage young minds in active, creative learning. As a member in the Raleigh-Wake Reading Council of the International Literacy (Reading) Association and the North Carolina Reading Association I have enjoyed encouraging students to write for the Annual Young Author’s Contest. Since 1995 over 100 of my students have entered and nearly 70 have won at the County level and 50 at the State level.
I have a competitive nature and encourage my students to challenge themselves in academic and creative competition. To that end I coach and advise students in the annual Carter G. Woodson Knowledge Bowl (in Black History) sponsored by Omega Psi Phi Fraternity. Since 2007 Underwood has place in 10 competitions at 1st, 2nd and 3rd places. My love of history also was the catalyst in 2005 to forming MUG T MES Historians a Tar Heel Junior Historian Club through the NC Museum of History. Students participate in Historical research projects for State competition. Annually the winners are recognized at the Tar Heel Junior Historians Convention with students grades 4-12. Winning students have their entries displayed in the Museum THJH Gallery for a year. Underwood has enjoyed winning in one or more categories for the past 10 years.
My husband and I have cherished 34 years together. We have three ‘grown’ children Ander an artist, Cypriane a Preschool teacher, graduating Wake Tech this summer, Imani-Nia a sophomore at St. Augustine’s College majoring in Criminal Justice and minoring in African American History.

Equity Team updates:

There is a one-man play called, The Talk.  The 75 minute show is a poignant portrayal of a parent's struggle to protect and prepare his child for the racially divided world we live in, written and powerfully performed by Sonny Kelly.  The show is followed by a facilitated conversation with the audience.
I am happy to announce that the Enloe High School PTSA is bringing Sonny and his show to Raleigh on Thursday, April 4, 7:00-9:00PM, which includes the talk-back.  The performance will take place in the Enloe auditorium, 128 Clarendon Crescent.

Here is the link for tickets, and please note various price points:  https://enloe.memberhub.store/shopping/categories/12532

Below is a video trailer about the show,  an article that appeared in the Herald Sun, and a link to The State of Things interview with Sonny Kelly.
Also, there is an excellent free  podcast on Revisionist History by Malcolm Gladwell about the beginning of  integration in schools and explains why we have less African American teachers. It is about 34 minutes long.    Miss Buchanan's Period of Adjustment.

Student Assignment for 2019-20
From student Assignment Office: As we begin to hear appeals for the Board, please remind your staff that they should not write letters of support for a family to transfer to a school.  The Office of Student Assignment will reach out to schools for additional information, if necessary, in order to get additional facts regarding a transfer request.

Early Release:
If you missed the Early Release, you will need to make up the 2nd part of the Trauma webinar.  See Travis for details.

ArtsPleasure-  Years ago, staff ran ArtsPleasure!  In an effort to give back to our generous families, we feel this is the year that we go back to the way things were.  Our parents come to ArtsPleasure to celebrate the gifts and talents we nurture and help grow each day. If they are volunteering, it makes it very challenging to see/enjoy their child’s performance.  We are hoping all staff will join together and cover at least 30 minutes on March 21st. Please review the link to see if and when you can help cover this special night! LINK

If you have a student performing and want to know so you can sign up-  check the schedule here!

Miles for Wellness

Library Notices
This year library notices have been given to classroom teachers 1 - 2 times a month. Hopefully this has helped students to keep up with what books they have checked out and overdue. Beginning this week, we are piloting a program in which families will receive a biweekly email with their student(s)' overdue book(s). Students are encouraged to come talk with us immediately if they have a lost book - we are happy to help find the book or schedule time to "work off" a fine. Our goal is to have all students able to check out books!

Winter Carnival -- Thank you again to all of you that are willing to give your time for the Winter Carnival - here are the winners and their contact information - https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qHyhmsoTD1oFmyoURsMsRWMQxcyHThTTUsPmpjqxIFI/edit?usp=sharing . Come learn more about using EASi and inputting incident reports, gather ideas for supporting fidgety students, or brainstorm ways to strengthen connections with your students. You're also welcome to come with other concerns to brainstorm solutions for tricky problems! Feel free to RSVP to Mary English or just show up! We hope you will join us!  This is open to all staff!

PTA Stipends-  If you have needs or requests, the PTA has asked that you spend the money prior to May 1st. Before submitting a request through our Instructional Needs Form, please spend this money first.  Please let us know if you have any questions.

RTA Summer Camp - Our Summer Camp will be at Brentwood Road Elementary and we will be with Brentwood and Joyner. Summer Camp will run from July 15-30th for 12 student days.  The teacher workdays are July 11, 12, and half-day on July 31. Staff interested in serving as the Lead Teacher will need to apply for the position in Applitrack.  Each host site has a posting for the Lead Teacher position.

A Great Resource-  Have you heard of Unite for Literacy?  It is free and allows you to choose books that students can read (and also listen to in their own language).  Read more here to learn about the program.  Please share it

Friday Wind Downs-  Come wind down after a busy week at one of the businesses in Five Points (The Pointe, Lola's Beach Bar, NOFO, etc). Come have a snack and/or drink and chat with your friends outside of school. Use this link to sign up so we know if there people going and who all will be there. Sunshine Squad may buy a snack every once in awhile, but we will not be able to provide a snack each time.
