October 28th

Celebrations

  • Celebrating and connecting with our new staff members:  Dawn Spiggle
 (Music Teacher)
My name is Dawn Spiggle and I am thrilled to be a part of the
Underwood family as the new music teacher. While most of my
experience is at the elementary level, I also have experience
teaching instrumental and choral music. Elementary music is my
favorite subject to teach.
This year is my first year teaching in a magnet school. I love
being surrounded by talented and inspiring educators and students
at Underwood. I am having a great time building relationships, and I
am learning so much every day. It is rewarding to see student
creativity, energy, and engagement in a positive, nurturing school environment.
I am originally from Morganton, NC, in the western part of the state.
My primary instruments are piano and French horn. I enjoy playing
French horn as a part of the Raleigh Community Band.
Other interests include reading, hiking, spending time with friends and
family, and travel. Some of my favorite travel destinations include Ocracoke,
Asheville, and New Orleans. I have a sweet cat named Zoe, and I am lucky
to have four loving and adventurous nieces and nephews who live in Arlington, VA.

I am grateful for this new beginning in my life, and I couldn’t be happier to be
a part of the UGTM community.
Unicorn Trot!!  PTA planned a successful event that the students thoroughly enjoyed!
They also exceeded their goal!!!

Wish Well

Deby Jacobs, her family and her daughter Molly.

Celebration

Celebrating and connecting with our new staff members:  Rachel Ward (1st grade TA) My name is Rachel Ward and I am so excited to join the Underwood family! I am working with the first grade team as an instructional assistant. I have previous TA experience from Johnston county but most recently was a nurse tech at the Johnston Health emergency room. I am so happy to be working with first graders and helping them grow in all areas of life.  I was born and raised in Upstate NY but don’t let that fool you... I strongly dislike the cold preferring warm weather and all activities that involve being outside!!! I moved to NC in 2001 and obtained my bachelors degree from UNCW. I am married to a wonderful Captain on the Garner fire department and we have two girls, 8 and 6 years old. We also have fur babies, 2 dogs who accompany us on all of our adventures, and 2 cats who are very dear to me (even though they might not feel the same).  I look forward to getting to know everyone better each day and trying my best to always be helpful and compassionate.

to read 2020 books!!  We have already read 1,652 books! We are the top in our area AND we

If you have a chance, please update your minutes in this form.  If you don’t, I will come around
and do it this week.
Please remind parents to have their children read.

Hall Displays -  as a follow up to Jodee Gupton's presentation Just a reminder that high quality
hall displays should:  connect to our Gifted & Talented theme, include a title and standards
addressed, and include visual appeal.

Reflections 2018-  Heroes Around Me
Encourage your students to participate in Reflections 2018.  Reflections is a run by the National
PTA and directly aligns with our gifted and talented theme.  The students use the arts to share
their “reflection” of the theme Heroes Around Me. All entries must be submitted by October
29th. The Reflections Team will select projects that display the theme and those will be taken to
the county.  County winners will then move on to the next division. If you have any questions,
