October 22nd

Celebration

Celebrating and connecting with our new staff members:  Rachel Ward (1st grade TA) My name is Rachel Ward and I am so excited to join the Underwood family! I am working with the first grade team as an instructional assistant. I have previous TA experience from Johnston county but most recently was a nurse tech at the Johnston Health emergency room. I am so happy to be working with first graders and helping them grow in all areas of life.  I was born and raised in Upstate NY but don’t let that fool you... I strongly dislike the cold preferring warm weather and all activities that involve being outside!!! I moved to NC in 2001 and obtained my bachelors degree from UNCW. I am married to a wonderful Captain on the Garner fire department and we have two girls, 8 and 6 years old. We also have fur babies, 2 dogs who accompany us on all of our adventures, and 2 cats who are very dear to me (even though they might not feel the same).  I look forward to getting to know everyone better each day and trying my best to always be helpful and compassionate.

Weather Days - Reminder that Thursday and Friday were banked days for students.
Staff members will need to work the hours or take leave for the days as these serve as
either workdays or student times. Make up hour sheet.

Readvolution-  Readvolution-  You all are still rocking it!  The county’s goal for each school is
to read 2020 books!!  We have already read 1,652 books! We are the top in our area AND we
only have 449 students!  I will still be updating the minutes on the goal outside of the bathrooms.
If you have a chance, please update your minutes in this form.  If you don’t, I will come around
and do it this week.
Please remind parents to have their children read.

Science Professional Development-  If interested, check out this link.

Creativity

Writing Continuum Training- The county is seeking teams of teachers who are interested in
focusing on writing across the content areas within their school and growing students as writers.
If you are interested, please see the following information in this link.

Hall Displays -  as a follow up to Jodee Gupton's presentation Just a reminder that high quality
hall displays should:  connect to our Gifted & Talented theme, include a title and standards
addressed, and include visual appeal.

Reflections 2018-  Heroes Around Me
Encourage your students to participate in Reflections 2018.  Reflections is a run by the National
PTA and directly aligns with our gifted and talented theme.  The students use the arts to share
their “reflection” of the theme Heroes Around Me. All entries must be submitted by October
29th. The Reflections Team will select projects that display the theme and those will be taken to
the county.  County winners will then move on to the next division. If you have any questions,
please contact Alexandria.
