February 4th

Celebrations

Shannon McKenna (Spanish Teacher)

I am a passionate teacher and lifelong learner.  I
grew up outside Philadelphia and have be blessed to
have lived in many different places - from Arizona
to New York City, to Guatemala and Mexico.  I
enjoy traveling, going for walks, and practicing
yoga. Do I prefer the mountains or the beach? I
can't say, I love them both!
  • Staff who volunteered or visited the Winter Carnival….and our incredible PTA!
  • Cheryl, Ny’Asia, Christine, Heather Burton, Jen Page, and Holly for administering the NC Check-Ins for students with accomodations.
  • Alexandria for organizing the NC Check In and the participation from 3rd, 4th and 5th grade teams!
  • Andrea and Elizabeth for checking, collecting and managing the Chrome Books that are broken.
  • Heather Peaden for leading the first Equity Meeting.

Business Meeting- Business Meeting Agenda for Tuesday at 7:45
Staff Outing-Join us for a night of learning and fun!  The film, Resilience, will be shown at Enloe HS on February, 13th at 6pm.   This groundbreaking one hour documentary chronicles the birth of a new movement among pediatricians, therapists, educators and communities, who are using cutting-edge brain science to disrupt cycles of violence, addiction, and disease.  Our intent is to create awareness around how trauma can impact students in our community. Following the film, we will meet at Mary English’s house for an informal debrief about how we can support our work at Underwood! You will need to register for this (free) event here.
Lockdown Drill-  Everyone did a great job with the Lockdown drill this past Friday.  A couple of reminders the police officers and security stressed:
  • -The doors have to be locked-  leaving a door unlocked if there is an intruder puts all students in that classroom at risk.  If you do not have a key, please ask Cindy for one immediately.
  • -We had one student hide in the bathroom stall.  Remind students if they do this, they need to stand on the stall to hide their feet.
  • -Cover your classroom door window- the officers could see several students in classrooms.  We understand that this was in conflict from a previous meeting.
Report Cards-  Report cards are scheduled to go home this Tuesday, February 5th.  Please include the following things in your report cards envelopes:
  • Report Card
  • Elective Report Card
  • MClass Report
  • Retention letter (Alexandria will hand these out to teacher on Monday
As a reminder, for any student receiving a 2 in any area on the elective report, an explanation should be provided.
Check the Underwood Calendar often….

Check the shared Underwood google team drive, folder-Daily absences and info for the preferred sub list.

CAM Docent Program-The CAM Docent program is starting on February 6th.  This is an incredible experience for 5th grade students to work directly with an artist, learn about their work, then showcase their knowledge to the public during First Friday Raleigh Events.  We need staff to attend the training sessions to help the CAM staff. Sign up here if you are willing to help!

NKT-  The window for mid-year NKT closes on Friday.  You only have to assess the students that were in the red and yellow at the BOY.  Thanks to collaborative team work, you will only assess the students in RED in the AMC.  The students who are in the YELLOW will be intervened on the area where the NKT shows a need.  Alexandria will organize this if your team would like. Please review this link to ensure you have assessed the students you need to assess by Friday.  Please let Alexandria know if you or your team needs help.

Q3 Electives-  Elective began on  Monday, January 28th. The spreadsheet for what you are teaching Q3/Q4 can be found here.  If you want to utilize the Magnet laptops during Q3, see Andrea.  Upload your elective letter to the website (directions here) by January 31st.
Resource for parents to include in your newsletters-Just a reminder that our Homework Resources for Parents page is growing! We now have ELA resources for Grade 3 through 5 in both English and Spanish! This is a great way to engage families in how to have the conversations with their child around their learning.  You can find it by going to Parents, then Homework Resources in the dropdown, on either the district site or on your school's homepage.
Helping Hands-This program will be an afterschool program to mentor some of our African American males in grades 3-5.  Participating students can be found here.  The program meets on Mondays at 4pm.

Together we are better!  Feel free to share feedback/celebrations anytime here

Summer Camp - The Raleigh Parks and Rec are looking forward to an amazing summer at your hosting schools. Even though it is super cold and hard to think about, summer is right around the corner for us. We have begun hiring awesome camp staff. I would love it if you could pass long these job opportunities to your staff and anyone else you may think is interested. It is a fun and engaging job that requires NO night a weekends.
